The Lion and the Rat

The Lion and the Rat

We should, as much as we can, be kind to everyone:
We often need those smaller than ourselves.

Two fables shall attest this truth,
For proof of it abounds.

Among others, the Lion and the Rat
Bore witness to this case.

A Rat came tumbling from the ground, quite recklessly.
The King of Beasts, on this occasion,
Showed who he wasโ€”and spared the creatureโ€™s life.

This kindness was not lost.
Who would have ever thought
A Lion could need a Rat?

Yet it so happened that, upon leaving the forest,
This Lion was caught in nets,
From which his roars could not set him free.

Sir Rat came running, and gnawed so well
That one mesh chewed through undid the whole.

Patience and the length of time
Accomplish more than strength or rage.
